Utilities: Right now Heating and hot water is included in the rent. I am researching various systems to see which is the most cost efficient and plan to install one or more systems in the summer. At that point tenants will be responsible for heating. If I don't install a new sytem(s) or update existing systems then I will still be responsible for heating and hot water.

Laundry: There is a Laundrette two doors away. Go there throw your laundry in to a washing machine - go home and read the newspaper - come back in 30 minutes and put it in the dryer. Done.

Stores: Three doors away there is a convenience store. Star Market is within walking distance.
Best Buy, Filenes etc. are a 5 minute drive away in the Watertown Mall. The ultimate geek store The Microcenter is a 5 minutes drive. Compuseless is also a 5 minutes drive in the opposite direction.

Internet Access: RCN and Comcast are the local cable providers and broadband providers. Verizon etc. can supply DSL. There are numerous Wireless access points in the neighborhood that people either freely provide or they don't know how to secure their wireless networks. Or you could harass MIT into giving you access to "Roofnet" their free wireless access they are constantly expanding.

About Allston: Is it a nice area? Is it safe? what sort of people live there?
Allston is split down the middle by the Mass Pike (no, rush hour traffic is not outside the door). It has two distinct areas. On the Cambridge side it's residential, quiet and has been becoming more and more gentrified over the last five years due to the Harvard expansion. There are a couple of local bars, a small mall for groceries office supplies etc. This is where the apartment is located.
The Brookline side is bigger, louder, more diverse ethnically and has big selection of restraunts and bars. Some reporter used the phrase "Rock City".

On the Brookline side it is a mix of Bars, Restraunts and a lot of student accomodation catering to BC and BU.
Is it safe? Absolutely. Statistically safer than Cambridge and about the same as Brookline.
